Notes
On June 9th, 2015, the Quelle building in our hometown of Nuremberg, Germany, was sold in a compulsory auction to global investor Sonae Sierra. The Quelle building was Europe’s biggest post-war warehouse – an area of 250.000 squaremetres. A place to get lost in. As the Quelle corporation went bankrupt and the warehouse was closed down June 9th, 2009, the building went through a resurrection of sorts. Around 170 artists, musicians and freelancers took over parts of the building - an anarchic and confusing multitude, creative, utopian, priggish, cooperative, aimless, over-ambitious, ambiguous, arrogant, and beautiful. The mood of the building went from „factory“ to „freedom“; from fordist chain working to situationist „Travailler? Jamais!“. It was also a home for all of the free-form music released on Fake.
Today, Sonae Sierra bought the whole building. The eviction notice leaves a moratory of six months for everyone to leave the place. Then the next big shopping mall will move in to go bankrupt ca. 2020 – as some of Sierra’s projects did before.
This is how urban open space is treated in neoliberal times. This is how a city kills those open spaces. How a city doesn’t work for the people, but against them. This is C.R.E.A.M. And this is how most of the tenants reacted. Most of them didn‘t even waste a thought on squatting parts of the building, on radical or symbolic action. In neoliberalism, the artists stand in line. Or, as film-maker and author Hito Steyerl has noted: „If the factory is everywhere, then there is no longer a gate by which to leave it […].“
These tracks were recorded, assembled and edited on June 9th, 2015. The anger persists. Politics is a wound that will never heal.
